Dettlaff van der Eretein

A Higher Vampire and the tragic antagonist of Blood and Wine, known as the Beast of Beauclair.

Dettlaff is a Higher Vampire whose grief and rage drive the central mystery of Blood and Wine, the expansion set in the duchy of Toussaint. To the people of Beauclair he is the Beast, a killer who has been striking at the city’s knights.

Geralt is drawn into the case when Duchess Anna Henrietta asks him to find and stop the creature. As he follows the trail, it becomes clear that the truth is more personal and more tragic than a simple monster hunt. Regis, another Higher Vampire, is drawn into the story as well.

What makes Dettlaff memorable is how the game frames his choices. The confrontation depends on how Geralt reads the situation, and the story treats him with more sympathy than most creatures of his kind.
