Overview
Father Knows Worst is a Blood and Wine secondary quest set in the Albertus Grotto, north of the Rioux-Cannes outpost. It starts from a notice on the Gran’place board or by finding the grotto. At the entrance, Lucien and Auguste Monnart beg Geralt to save their brother Hugo, who is trapped inside.
Into the grotto
The cave is full of kikimore workers and a kikimore warrior. Their poison drives up toxicity fast, so drink potions before the fight. A sword and a trail of blood lead to Hugo, who takes Geralt for an assassin. He explains that his father left the family liquor business to all three sons and split his still into three parts, one for each. Hugo believes his brothers want him out of the business.
The missing part
Hugo asks Geralt to find his part, the still filter. It lies at the bottom of a scalding hot spring back in the earlier cave; Quen protects against the heat. A side passage holds more kikimores, an Axii place of power and a letter explaining how the part was lost. Hugo pays 100 crowns for the filter. Agreeing to search for it, before finding it, counts as a Proof of Honor for There Can Be Only One. If Geralt leaves the cave early, Hugo meets him at the exit and this part is lost.
A happy reunion?
At the exit, Lucien and Auguste are waiting with armed men, and Hugo asks Geralt to kill them.
- Fight. It soon becomes clear something is off, and the brothers survive. Hugo thanks Geralt, pays nothing, and says he will probably leave Toussaint. He becomes a merchant who pays unusually well and buys almost anything, even potions and decoctions.
- Refuse to fight. The men are only hunters from a nearby camp who came to help. The brothers make peace, pay the agreed fee and invite Geralt to the Clever Clogs tavern. This counts as a Proof of Wisdom.
