Overview
Thou Shalt Not Pass is a secondary quest in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt (recommended level 7). It starts when Geralt talks to a Redanian guard on the bridge to the Border Post in Velen, or at the Western Gate into Oxenfurt.
The blockade
Because of the war, Redania has shut the main crossings over the Pontar. Until Geralt has papers, the guards turn him away. You can still swim across well away from the posts, and fast travel between signposts on either bank works without a pass. At the Border Post the guard can be bribed with 10 crowns, or charmed with Axii, to explain how to get one.
Three ways to get a pass
- Official papers from the Baron. During the main quest Family Matters, Phillip Strenger sends Geralt to Oxenfurt and hands him a letter of safe conduct.
- A contract reward. Contract: Woodland Beast can also pay out with an official pass.
- Forged papers. A shady merchant in the refugee camp south of the Border Post sells a fake transit pass. The price drops sharply if you helped his brother-in-law in Bitter Harvest. See also Fake Papers.
Using the pass
Show any of these papers to a border guard and he lets Geralt through, which ends the quest. The fake pass even works at the Western Gate, although the guard grumbles about the missing seal. Note that after meeting Gregor in A Deadly Plot, the Border Post guard no longer completes the quest, so use the Western Gate instead.
