“Hendrik” is only a cover name. The man behind it was a Nilfgaardian agent living in Heatherton in Velen, posing as a merchant while quietly taking notes on the locals. His most important task was to gather everything he could about Ciri and report it to Emperor Emhyr.
In The Witcher 3
The Wild Hunt learned what Hendrik was and came to Heatherton for his information. They slaughtered many of the villagers and found the spy hiding in his hut, but for all their torture they never found his notes before they killed him.
Emhyr sends Geralt to meet Hendrik in The Nilfgaardian Connection. The witcher arrives to find a dead man and a ruined village, and has to use his own skills to track down the hidden notes, which point him toward the Bloody Baron and Ciri’s trail in Velen.
