Gretka is a young girl from a poor family in Velen. With the war making food scarce, her parents can barely feed their children. When she breaks the jar holding the family’s milk, her father tells her to follow a trail of treats and come back when she is full. The trail is one of the paths used to send unwanted children into Crookback Bog, to the Crones.
In The Witcher 3
Gretka gets distracted by a butterfly, wanders into a dry riverbed and ends up up a tree, surrounded by wolves. That is where Ciri, fleeing the Wild Hunt, finds her in Ciri’s Story: The King of the Wolves. Ciri drives off the wolves, and together they head for the only way out, a cave where Ciri kills a werewolf and saves a man’s life. The grateful man takes them to the Bloody Baron.
Knowing her family cannot feed her, the Baron lets Gretka stay at Crow’s Perch and work in the kitchen. Ciri keeps her company during her stay, and gives her an emerald before she leaves.
