In A Matter of Life and Death, Moritz runs into Triss and Geralt at the masquerade ball at the Vegelbud estate. He is not pleased to see her, and when she offers him a place among the mages fleeing Novigrad, he refuses outright, calling her a lame duck. Triss suspects the real problem is that he would rather lead than follow.
His pride costs him. The witch hunters track him down, and in Now or Never Geralt can find him tied to a pyre outside the Glory Gate, with a chance to save him before the flames do their work.
