Overview
In the Eternal Fire’s Shadow is a secondary quest in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, added with the next-gen update (patch 4.0). It is set at Devil’s Pit in the Grayrocks area of Velen, and it rewards the diagrams for the Forgotten Wolf School gear.
The deacon’s request
Outside Devil’s Pit, a young deacon of the Eternal Fire, fresh from his studies and eager to help people, wants the abandoned mines cleared. Long ago the Church used them to isolate victims of the scarlet fog, a plague, and whatever is left down there still frightens people. If Geralt learned the truth about the priest in Funeral Pyres, he can bring it up. The deacon hands over the key to the mine gate.
Reinald
Notes and letters inside reveal that someone named Reinald was here before Geralt, and that he was a witcher of the Wolf School. As the doors open, a voice begs Geralt to hurry, and torches light up to lead the way. The magic lamp shows glimpses of what happened here, and Witcher Senses reveal old Wolf School markings and bones glowing red.
The voice wants Geralt to go straight right. Exploring the left-hand tunnels first tells the full story and lets you brew Reinald’s Philter, which helps later. The mines are sealed again when the quest ends, so explore now if you want to.
The red miasmal
Reinald is pinned among salt stalagmites, begging to be freed. Breaking them with Aard is the point of no return. The thing speaking is a red miasmal possessing him. A Yrden trap followed by Aard drives it out quickly. Then the miasmal fights on its own, teleporting and summoning plague victims.
Reinald’s rest
Freed, Reinald’s spirit gives Geralt his armor and sword diagrams. He cannot rest yet. Geralt can burn his remains straight away, or bring the deacon to him. Reinald’s hatred of the Church runs deep, and what Geralt says decides whether the young deacon walks out alive. Arguing that the boy is innocent and does not need the Church to do good is the safest path.
