Matilda’s mother was a washerwoman at Vermentino, and as a little girl Matilda dreamed of running the vineyard one day. Lady Vermentino used to feed her grapes, and Matilda sometimes wished the lady were her real mother. When her mother died, the childless Vermentinos took her in, and in time the estate became hers.

In Blood and Wine

Matilda’s rivalry with Liam de Coronata from across Plegmund’s Bridge comes to a head when the Belgaard Vineyard loses its owner to the Beast of Beauclair. She asks Geralt for help in Wine Wars: Vermentino. Depending on whom Geralt helps and whether he uncovers the saboteur in The Deus in the Machina, she ends up running Belgaard alone, staying a small vintner, sharing Belgaard with Liam through gritted teeth, or joining him as partner and sweetheart.
