Calanthe was queen of Cintra, one of the strongest kingdoms of the North, and one of the few rulers who had earned her nickname on the battlefield. Known as the Lioness of Cintra, she was a fierce fighter, a sharp politician and a mother who cared more about her family than about court convention. She was married to Eist Tuirseach of Skellige, and their daughter was Pavetta.

Her name is tied to one of the saga’s most famous events, told in the story A Question of Price: Pavetta’s betrothal feast, the cursed suitor Duny, and the Law of Surprise that bound Geralt to a child who had not yet been born. Calanthe, who at first refused to accept the match, eventually gave way, and the girl who came out of it was Ciri.

Calanthe died during Nilfgaard’s invasion of Cintra, an event that scattered her family and left her granddaughter alone. Her legacy lives on in Ciri, who inherits her fire, her stubbornness and her refusal to bow to anyone.
