There are 181 collectible Gwent cards in The Witcher 3: 144 in the base game, 10 from Hearts of Stone and 27 from Blood and Wine. You start with a Northern Realms deck in White Orchard, and the rest you win, buy or find across the whole map. This guide goes region by region in the order you’ll reach them, and it lists every source we could confirm in the game’s own data files: which players hand out which card, what each merchant and innkeep sells, and which cards only drop at random.
Tick off cards as you go with our Gwent card checklist. It saves in your browser, and the deck builder can then show only the cards you own.
Quick answer
- Challenge every player with the Gwent icon. Quest opponents give one fixed, unique card each, and ordinary merchants, innkeeps and villagers give a random card from a shared pool.
- Buy the cards merchants and innkeeps sell. They have them in stock until you buy them.
- Do the Gwent quests: Collect ‘Em All, Gwent: Playing Innkeeps, Gwent: Velen Players, Gwent: Big City Players, Gwent: Old Pals, Gwent: Skellige Style and High Stakes.
- Don’t miss the one-time chances: the four High Stakes leaders, the three cards at the masquerade ball in A Matter of Life and Death, Foltest: The Siegemaster in Vizima and the caged merchant near Claywich. See missable cards below.
- Only base-game cards count for Collect ‘Em All and the Card Collector achievement, and you need one copy of each.
How you get Gwent cards
Every card comes from one of five places:
- Starter decks. Geralt gets a Northern Realms deck when he learns the game in White Orchard, and Count Monnier hands out a basic Skellige deck in Blood and Wine.
- Quest opponents. Named players such as the Bloody Baron, Zoltan or Crach an Craite each give one specific card, often a hero or a leader. Many of them also have a fail-safe: if they die or leave, the card turns up in their room or notes.
- Merchants and innkeeps. Shops with the Gwent icon sell a few fixed cards each. Their stock is listed region by region below.
- Random rewards. Ordinary players, such as merchants, innkeeps and villagers, give a random card from a shared pool when you beat them. You can keep playing them for more, until they have nothing new to give.
- Quests and loot. A few cards are quest rewards or lie in a specific spot, such as the three cards in A Dangerous Game or the Cow in Dead Man’s Party.
Tip: if a match is too hard, the game’s Gwent Difficulty Level option changes your opponents’ decks. The game files give every opponent three versions of their deck, and the easy version usually has fewer and weaker cards. See our Gwent opponent decks for the exact lists.
White Orchard
Talk to Aldert Geert in the White Orchard tavern. He teaches Geralt the game, gives him the Northern Realms starter deck and starts Collect ‘Em All. Beat him to win Zoltan Chivay.
Starter deck: the leader is Foltest: King of Temeria, and the deck includes Ves, Keira Metz, Síle de Tansarville, Sabrina Glevissig, Sheldon Skaggs, Dethmold, Prince Stennis, Siegfried of Denesle, Dun Banner Medic, Yarpen Zigrin, Trebuchet, Ballista, Kaedweni Siege Expert, Redanian Foot Soldier, Poor Fucking Infantry and Blue Stripes Commando, plus two each of Biting Frost, Impenetrable Fog, Torrential Rain and Clear Weather.
For sale: Elsa, the innkeep, and the merchant in the village sell Catapult, Blue Stripes Commando, Crinfrid Reavers Dragon Hunter and Foltest: Lord Commander of the North, and the inn also has a Decoy. That’s the first of two Catapults, and with both on the Siege row they Tight Bond for 16 each.
Vizima
At the Royal Palace in Vizima you can play a Nilfgaardian nobleman in the gardens. Win to get the leader Foltest: The Siegemaster. You don’t spend much time at the palace, so play him the first time you’re there.
Velen
Velen players
These four are part of Gwent: Velen Players. Beat all of them and you also get the leader Eredin: Bringer of Death.
- The Bloody Baron at Crow’s Perch: Sigismund Dijkstra
- Haddy, the young card prodigy in Midcopse: Vernon Roche
- The Old Sage, a soothsayer in Benek: Crone: Weavess

- The merchant you free from a cage southeast of the Boatmakers’ Hut, near Claywich: Etolian Auxiliary Archers, Black Infantry Archer, Crinfrid Reavers Dragon Hunter, Puttkammer, Sweers. He’s the only seller of Puttkammer and Sweers in the base game.
Novigrad and Oxenfurt

- Stjepan, the innkeep of The Alchemy in Oxenfurt: Yennefer of Vengerberg

More cards come from quests. In A Dangerous Game, choose the cards as your reward to keep Fringilla Vigo, John Natalis and Isengrim Faoiltiarna. The masquerade ball in A Matter of Life and Death has a Gwent competition with Milva, Vampire: Bruxa and Dandelion as prizes, and the High Stakes tournament at the Passiflora pays out four leaders: Foltest: The Steel-Forged, Emhyr var Emreis: The Relentless, Francesca Findabair: Queen of Dol Blathanna and Eredin: Destroyer of Worlds. Our Gwent tournament guide covers both events.

Skellige

Random cards from ordinary players
A big part of the collection isn’t sold or tied to a quest. The game files put these cards in a random pool that ordinary players draw from when you beat them, so the only way to get them is to keep playing every merchant, innkeep and villager with the Gwent icon. Spread your games around, since a player stops giving cards once there’s nothing new left for them to hand out.
The random pool: Assire var Anahid, Stefan Skellen, Renuald aep Matsen, Rotten Mangonel, Shilard Fitz-Oesterlen, Vanhemar, Vattier de Rideaux, Vreemde, Cahir Mawr Dyffryn aep Ceallach, Siege Tower, Philippa Eilhart, Dennis Cranmer, Ida Emean aep Sivney, Filavandrel aén Fidháil, Toruviel, Riordain, Ciaran aep Easnillien, Havekar Smuggler, Dol Blathanna Scout ×2, Dwarven Skirmisher ×2, Elven Skirmisher ×2, Vrihedd Brigade Recruit, Havekar Healer, Kayran, Imlerith, Forktail, Griffin, Plague Maiden, Frightener, Endrega, Gargoyle, Celaeno Harpy, Fire Elemental, Arachas Behemoth, Nekker, Grave Hag, Vampire: Garkain, Wyvern, Ghoul ×2, Crone: Brewess, Cockatrice, Emiel Regis Rohellec Terzieff, Villentretenmerth, Biting Frost, Impenetrable Fog, Torrential Rain and Clear Weather.
Hearts of Stone cards
The 10 Hearts of Stone cards don’t count for Collect ‘Em All, but you need them for a full collection.
- Shani at her clinic in Oxenfurt: Olgierd von Everec (if you miss her, the card is on the upstairs table)
- Olgierd von Everec at The Alchemy in Oxenfurt: Toad (it’s on a table in The Alchemy if you miss the game)
- Robert Hilbert during the heist in Open Sesame!: Gaunter O’Dimm
- The upper loft of the barn at the wedding in Dead Man’s Party: Cow
- Dulla kh’Amanni, the Ofieri merchant at Upper Mill, sells Francesca Findabair: Hope of the Aen Seidhe, Eredin Bréacc Glas: The Treacherous and Gaunter O’Dimm: Darkness
- The elven merchant at the circus camp near Carsten sells Emhyr var Emreis: Invader of the North, Foltest: Son of Medell and two Gaunter O’Dimm: Darkness, plus spare copies of many Novigrad shop cards
- The circus camp near Carsten is also where you get Schirrú
Blood and Wine cards
Blood and Wine adds the Skellige faction. Start Gwent: Never Fear, Skellige’s Here and Count Monnier gives you a basic Skellige deck with the leader Crach an Craite. The rest of the Skellige cards are won from players all over Toussaint:
- Beauclair: Draig Bon-Dhu (the innkeep of The Pheasantry, so play him before the tournament closes the inn), Light Longship, Kambi (the armorer at the Beauclair Armory), Clan Dimun Pirate, Mardroeme ×2, Olaf, Young Berserker (Pierre the tailor), King Bran (the Ducal Camerlengo) and Skellige Storm
- The Tourney Grounds: Young Berserker (the blacksmith), Skellige Storm ×2 and War Longship (the innkeep)
- Francollarts: Clan Drummond Shield Maiden (the armorer) and Ermion (the innkeep)
- The Cockatrice Inn: Clan Drummond Shield Maiden
- Flovive: Cerys (the innkeep)
- Castel Ravello Vineyard: Clan Brokvar Archer (the herbalist)
A note on the leader: King Bran is won from the Ducal Camerlengo in Beauclair, and the game files also hand him out as the reward for beating Yaki Rafiberg after the Pheasantry tournament.
Missed something in the base game? The innkeeps in Toussaint sell spare copies of most of the base-game shop cards, including Puttkammer, Sweers and Barclay Els. With Blood and Wine you can also get Barclay Els and Vampire: Bruxa in Till Death Do You Part by siding with Margot.
Missable Gwent cards
- High Stakes: Foltest: The Steel-Forged, Emhyr var Emreis: The Relentless, Francesca Findabair: Queen of Dol Blathanna and Eredin: Destroyer of Worlds. Each leader only comes from beating that opponent. Save before every match.
- The masquerade ball in A Matter of Life and Death: Milva, Vampire: Bruxa and Dandelion. Bruxa can be won back in Blood and Wine.
- The Royal Palace in Vizima: Foltest: The Siegemaster.
- The caged merchant near Claywich: Puttkammer and Sweers, unless you have Blood and Wine.
- Roach: a promotional card that could only be redeemed until the end of 2023.
Several quest players have fail-safes, so their cards aren’t missable: the Bloody Baron’s card is in his office, Roche’s is in his notes, Lambert’s, Thaler’s, Olivier’s and Madman Lugos’s cards are in a locker or lockbox, and Crach’s Draug is handed over automatically.
