Overview
The Volunteer is a secondary quest in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, recommended at level 13. You can pick it up from the notice board in Oxenfurt or by simply riding to White Eagle Fort, just west of Oxenfurt Harbor. It is one of the lighter stories in the game, with a dark twist underneath.
Trollololo
At the fort Geralt hears singing so bad it sounds like a stuck pig. It belongs to a troll who calls himself Trollololo and believes he is a Redanian soldier. Soldiers had asked him to guard boats they had taken from local peasants. When the peasants came back for them, a fight broke out, and the troll tried to help but ended up killing everyone on both sides. Then, not wanting the meat to go to waste, he ate them.
The choice
Kill him. Geralt treats the troll as a danger to the region. His body yields hides, monster parts and a cave troll liver.
Let it slide. The troll asks for red and white paint so his fort can look like a proper Redanian stronghold. The paint is sold by a merchant in Oxenfurt. The troll then realizes he does not know how to paint the Redanian coat of arms, so Geralt can paint it himself or tell the troll to do it. The troll calls his own near-perfect copy ugly and praises Geralt’s cartoonish one. Either way Geralt receives the Gven’nel and Axeman’s gauntlets diagrams and some hides.
Tip
A diagram for the enhanced Griffin armor sits in a chest right beside the troll’s hut, so check it before you leave.
