Handsome Jacques is what you might call a revolving-door inmate of Toussaint Prison. One winter, with nowhere to sleep, he robbed a shopkeeper, only to be fined and flogged instead of jailed. So he changed tactics: he cut the tail off Count Bovieaux’s horse for a year and a half inside, and then filled Marshal de Lastaic’s helmet with dung, which earned him three more years. Behind bars he gets free food and a roof, and he has become an expert at smuggling things in. He also seems to know everything about everyone in the prison.

When Geralt is thrown in prison in Burlap is the New Stripe, Jacques is the first to greet him. He already knows why the witcher is there, and he leads him off to laundry duty. When trouble arrives in the laundry room, Jacques slips out, since in prison it is every man for himself. The loose brick behind him starts The Perks of Being a Jailbird.
