The Last Wish is a secondary quest in Skellige and the key moment of Geralt and Yennefer’s romance in The Witcher 3. It becomes available after The Calm Before the Storm, when Yennefer is staying at the inn in Larvik on Hindarsfjall. The name is a nod to Andrzej Sapkowski’s short story of the same name, in which Geralt’s wish to a djinn tied his fate to Yennefer’s for good.
Looking for a djinn
Yennefer explains that a djinn specialist named Amos var Ypsis vanished in a storm, and with him a bottled djinn. She wants it. Together they sail out from the Larvik docks, and Yennefer uses her magic to reveal shipwrecks under the water. The first two dives are dead ends: one ship belongs to Clan Drummond, the other is an ancient Heymaey longship. The real clue is on Ingdalen, where Geralt finds half of a broken seal and gets teleported away.
The wreck of the mage
The teleport drops Geralt on var Ypsis’s ship, where the mage’s remains lie crushed under a bookcase and the second half of the seal is waiting. Yennefer mends it and summons the djinn, which is not exactly thrilled to be called, so Geralt has to fight the elemental until Yennefer can bind it. Elementa oil on the silver sword helps a lot.
The real question
With the djinn under control, Yennefer uses the last wish to break the bond between them, and then asks the question the whole quest has been building up to: does Geralt still love her, now that no magic is involved? It is a quiet, beautifully written scene, and one of the most talked-about moments of the game.
