François le Goff is a young knight errant of Toussaint, engaged to Jacquette and quietly having second thoughts about it. In the grand tradition of Toussaint’s knights, he makes a vow before his bride-to-be: before the wedding, he will slay the monster lurking in a cave near the palace. It is a heroic promise, and also a very convenient way to put the marriage off.
In Blood and Wine
In Feet as Cold as Ice, a worried Jacquette asks Geralt to look after him. François is usually found asleep and snoring at his camp outside the cave. Whether he survives the fight with Grottore depends on Geralt staying by his side, and if he does survive, Geralt can send him home to marry or let him do as he pleases, which ends with a new vow to fetch a striped horse from Zerrikania and a broken engagement.
