Svanrige Tuirseach is the eldest son of King Bran and Birna. When his father dies, he becomes head of Clan Tuirseach and jarl of An Skellig.

At Bran’s funeral feast in The King is Dead – Long Live the King, Svanrige is the first to claim the throne. Unlike the other candidates, he does not set out to prove himself with some great deed; his mother simply insists the crown is his by right of birth. During the feast, Birna sends him out of the hall, and he is hiding in Hjalmar’s room when berserkers massacre the guests. Only Svanrige, Cerys and Hjalmar survive among the candidates.

Because the attack happened at the an Craite stronghold, Crach’s children must uncover who was behind it or be disqualified. In King’s Gambit, the evidence against Birna looks too thin, until Svanrige himself asks his mother why she sent him away just before the attack. She confesses, and he has to watch her condemned. If Geralt helps neither sibling, the investigation fails and Svanrige becomes king, just as his mother wanted.
