Kaer Morhen is the very first main quest in The Witcher 3 and the game’s tutorial. It opens in the old witcher keep in the Blue Mountains, with Geralt enjoying a bath until Yennefer interrupts him, as she tends to do, to remind him that he promised to train with Ciri. Geralt heads down to the courtyard, and the game teaches its basics along the way.
With Vesemir watching and offering dry commentary, Geralt spars with a young Ciri, learns to move, fight, dodge and use the witcher signs, and gets a feel for the combat system. The keep looks warm and alive, full of the people Geralt cares about most. It is a lovely, peaceful introduction, which makes it all the more striking when the dream turns dark and the Wild Hunt appears.
Geralt wakes up by a campfire, far from Kaer Morhen, with Vesemir beside him. Around them lies a landscape scarred by war, and they are following a trail, Yennefer’s trail. The quest sets up everything that follows: Ciri, the Hunt, Yennefer and the bond between Geralt and the old witcher who raised him.
