Possession

Overview

Possession is a secondary quest in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and one of the two quests that decide the throne of the Skellige Isles, alongside The Lord of Undvik. Crach an Craite gives it during The King is Dead – Long Live the King. His daughter Cerys has gone to Svorlag on Spikeroog, convinced that Jarl Udalryk is cursed. It fails if not completed before Battle Preparations.

Svorlag

Udalryk is troubled by strange dreams, and his advisor Hjort points Geralt toward villagers who knew the jarl as a boy. Bergthora sends him to the beach, where Eiric is surrounded by drowners. He reveals Cerys went into the jarl’s abandoned family home above the village.

Aki and the sword

Geralt finds Cerys passed out inside. She explains that Udalryk’s father gave the family sword, Brokvar, to his younger son Aki instead of the firstborn. Udalryk openly questioned the choice, breaking a sacred law, and was punished. Later he took Aki fishing to make peace, but a storm hit and Aki went overboard unnoticed. Many believe Udalryk killed him on purpose. Cerys thinks Aki’s ghost is haunting the jarl, and that returning the sword to him will end it.

The cellar key is in the back of the oven, and Brokvar lies in the cellar. Breaking the planks in the room where you find the key leads to a place of power, which is locked away once the quest ends. Near Ulula’s Needle, past a few sirens, Geralt dives down and lays the sword beside Aki’s bones.

The hym

When Geralt returns, Udalryk has torn out one of his own eyes on the orders of the “gods” in his head. Geralt realizes what is really happening: the jarl is haunted by a hym, a rare creature that feeds on guilt and drives its host to self-harm. It can be fought in its lair, with the host present, or tricked onto a new host who believes he has done something terrible, when in fact he has not.

Trust Cerys, or fight

Trust Cerys. Hours later she bursts in with the jarl’s newborn son and tells Geralt to put him in the heated oven. If he does, he has to hold off Udalryk’s guards. Then the hym latches onto Geralt’s guilt, until Hjort appears with the baby safe. He had been waiting on the other side of the oven all along. With no real guilt to feed on, the hym is banished.

The witcher’s way. Geralt sets four torches in the old house and fights the hym with Udalryk there, calming the jarl with Axii, and finishes it in the cellar.

Either way Udalryk is freed, and Cerys stays a while to see him recover. Together with The Lord of Undvik, finishing this quest opens the way to King’s Gambit.
