Contract: Woodland Beast is a witcher contract in Velen with a twist. A beast in the woods has developed a taste for Redanian supply wagons, and the captain of the nearby guard post has put a bounty on its head. The soldiers describe it as some kind of shaggy horror, and Geralt goes to have a look.
What he finds near the bandit camp northwest of the Inn at the Crossroads is no monster. The attacks are the work of Scoia’tael, elven guerrillas hiding in the forest and raiding the wagons to survive. That turns a simple monster hunt into a moral choice.
Geralt can turn the elves in to the Redanian captain, kill them himself, or keep their secret and let them go. Each choice has its own consequence and reward, and none of them is clean. It is a good example of how The Witcher 3 uses a contract to say something about the war, and about who the real monsters are.
