We finally have a year to circle. In August 2026, CD Projekt Red said it is targeting 2028 for the release of The Witcher 4. Joint CEO Michał Nowakowski called it the studio’s “biggest, boldest, and most ambitious game to date”, and asked fans to be patient: “I know it’s a bit of a wait, and you’d love to play it sooner – but let the team cook.”
It is worth noting that 2028 is a target and not a fixed date. Big games slip, and CD Projekt Red has been open about that.
What we know
- Platforms: PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
- Team: more than 500 people are working on the game.
- Lead character: Ciri, now a witcher in her own right.
- Engine: Unreal Engine 5, replacing CD Projekt Red’s own REDengine. The first technical demo, shown in June 2025, took place in the northern kingdom of Kovir.
- Story focus: joint CEO Adam Badowski has said the script is being rewritten often, so that the game’s choices leave a lasting impression on the player.
A new trilogy
The Witcher 4 is only the start. CD Projekt Red plans a new trilogy, The Witcher 4, 5 and 6, and aims to release all three within six years of each other. If that holds, the saga would wrap up around 2034.
Everything else in the pipeline
The studio is busy on several fronts at once. The Witcher 3 Remastered launched on September 29, 2026, and the third expansion Songs of the Past follows in 2027. The remake of the first Witcher game has been put on hold until The Witcher 4’s tools are ready. Beyond the Witcher, CD Projekt is also working on a Cyberpunk 2077 sequel, a multiplayer Witcher game codenamed Project Sirius, and a partnership game with Scopely.
