By the King’s Will is the opening main quest of The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings and is played in the Prologue, as a flashback Geralt recounts from the La Valette dungeons. King Foltest is besieging the fortified town and castle held by the rebel Baroness La Valette, and Geralt, who once saved the king’s life, is serving as his bodyguard.
Geralt has been staying in the royal camp with Triss Merigold, his lover and an advisor to Foltest. On the morning of the assault he is summoned to the king, who is meeting with Shilard Fitz-Oesterlen, the senior envoy of the Nilfgaardian Empire. The camp doubles as a tutorial area, with training dummies, a Place of Power and teachers for arm wrestling and dice poker.
After the talks, Foltest and Geralt take a turn on a ballista aimed at Count Etcheverry, then join the troops in a siege tower. The quest ends as the tower rolls toward the castle walls, leading into At the Fore.
