Kovir and Poviss is the far northern kingdom that everyone else in the North secretly envies. Its mines are full of ore and precious metals, its merchants trade with half the Continent, and its rulers have a gift for staying out of other people’s wars while selling them the iron to fight them. The capital is Pont Vanis, and the kingdom’s wealth makes it one of the most powerful players on the Continent, even when it doesn’t lift a sword.
Kovir in The Witcher 3
You never travel to Kovir in the games, but its influence is everywhere. The dwarven banker Vimme Vivaldi secured supplies of wood and iron from Kovir before Nilfgaard even crossed the Pontar, which tells you everything about where the smart money goes. In Blood and Wine you can meet Count Beledal, a rich Koviri noble with an expensive taste in wine and an even stranger hobby. And the mage Stregobor, whom Geralt has disliked for decades, has long had close ties to the Koviri court.
Kovir and the witchers
Kaer Seren, the coastal keep of the School of the Griffin, lies in Kovir and Poviss. The Griffin gear diagrams in The Witcher 3 are the main way modern players learn about it.
In the books
In the saga, Kovir stays officially neutral during the Second Northern War, a decision that makes it richer while its neighbours burn. Its young heir Tankred Thyssen even plays a part in the plans of the Lodge of Sorceresses, who want to marry Ciri into the Koviri royal family and put a magically gifted ruler on the richest throne in the North. Ciri, unsurprisingly, has other ideas.
