Temeria is one of the great Northern Kingdoms, with its capital at Vizima and white lilies on its banner. For most of the saga and the first two games it is ruled by King Foltest, a capable, stubborn and scandal-prone monarch whose family life could fill a bestiary on its own. Temeria is also the homeland of sorceresses Triss Merigold and Keira Metz.
Temeria in The Witcher 1
The first game takes place almost entirely in and around Vizima. Geralt gets dragged into a war between the Order of the Flaming Rose and the Scoia’tael, and works his way up to an audience with Foltest himself.
Temeria in The Witcher 2
The Witcher 2 opens with Foltest’s murder by the Kingslayer Letho, and Geralt is blamed for it. Temeria’s elite Blue Stripes, led by Vernon Roche, chase the real killer to Flotsam. With the king dead and his children too young to rule, the kingdom drifts into chaos, just in time for Nilfgaard’s next invasion.
Temeria in The Witcher 3
By The Witcher 3, Temeria no longer exists as a free kingdom. Nilfgaard holds Vizima and White Orchard, and Velen has become a war-torn no man’s land. Former Temerian soldiers are everywhere, including Phillip Strenger, the self-styled Bloody Baron of Crow’s Perch. Roche and Ves still fight on as partisans, and in Reason of State they strike a deal with Nilfgaard: if the plan works and Roche survives, Temeria comes back as a vassal state of the Empire. Not quite freedom, but more than most Temerians dared to hope for.
In the books
Foltest appears in the very first witcher story, where Geralt lifts the striga curse from his daughter Adda. Later, Temerian forces play a key role in stopping Nilfgaard in the Second Northern War, culminating in the Battle of Brenna.
