Contract: The Tufo Monster

Tremors under a vineyard estate and a missing worker lead Geralt to a shaelmaar, and to a secret the lady of the house would rather keep.

Overview

Contract: The Tufo Monster is a Blood and Wine witcher contract in Sansretour Marsh. It starts from the notice board in Flovive or with Jean-Christophe de Bourbeau at Tufo, northeast of the village. The pompous owner complains of noises from below and missing workers, and hands Geralt the key to his cellar.

The cellar

The monster only stirs at night, so meditate until dark if needed. After tremors shake the cellar, a cracked wall can be broken with Aard. Behind it, tunnels crawl with kikimores and their eggs; burning the eggs with Igni earns a bonus. Back upstairs, Jean-Christophe and his wife, Andrée de Bourbeau, are waiting. She tells Geralt where the worker Jean-Luc went missing.

Following the tracks

The clues show that Jean-Luc and Andrée were having a picnic rather than working. Their footprints split: hers lead back to the estate, his lead to blood and monster tracks. Enough clues let Geralt identify a shaelmaar. The trail runs into the Owl Eye Grottos, which Geralt also visits during Scavenger Hunt: Grandmaster Ursine Gear.

The monster

To lure the beast out, Geralt makes shaelmaar bait, which needs fresh human blood. The only fresh corpse is Jean-Luc’s, and his silver pendant lies beside him. After placing the bait, the Monster of Tufo appears at once. Like all shaelmaars, it is blind and hunts by sound, and Aard can make it crash into walls, though it recovers faster than most. Killing it counts as a Proof of Valor for There Can Be Only One.

The pendant

  • Give it to Jean-Christophe before collecting the fee, exposing the affair. He throws his wife out.
  • Give it to Andrée, who sits in front of the small red house, keeping her secret. This pays more and counts as a Proof of Compassion.

When told the monster is dead, Jean-Christophe finally has something nice to say about Geralt and pays the fee.
