Shaelmaar
Shaelmaars are relicts that live deep underground and only come to the surface to feed. They’re heavily armored with thick plating, and despite their size they’re surprisingly agile. They are also blind, so they find their prey through sound and vibration. Their signature attack is to curl into a ball and roll forward at tremendous speed, an unstoppable force that’s also immune to damage while curled up. After digging in, they can also send rocks flying in every direction.
Shaelmaars are a Blood and Wine monster, found in Toussaint. Your first meeting is in the main quest The Beast of Toussaint, where Guillaume fights a handicapped shaelmaar in the arena at the Tourney Grounds until it breaks free and Geralt has to step in. If you spare it afterward, it counts as proof of compassion in There Can Be Only One.
The Tufo Monster contract starts with tremors under the Tufo estate near Flovive and follows a missing worker’s trail to Owl Eye Grottos, where the monster turns out to be a shaelmaar. Others wait at Duchaton Crest in Vintner’s Contract: Duchaton Crest and near Plegmund’s Bridge in the treasure hunt What Was This About Again?. Hearts of Stone’s Avid Collector rewards a conserved shaelmaar trophy.
Combat strategy
The trick is to use its blindness and its charge against it. Stand near a wall or a large rock, cast Aard and dodge away, and the shaelmaar will roll straight into the obstacle. That tips it over and leaves its soft underbelly open to your attacks. If there’s nothing to crash it into, just stay out of its rolling path and punish the belly when it stops. Samum bombs disorient it well, and Igni also works. Don’t bother with Axii: it only makes the shaelmaar curl up into its invulnerable ball. Bombs can also send it crashing into obstacles, though that’s riskier.
- Coat your silver sword with relict oil.
- Cast Aard next to a wall and dodge so it crashes into the obstacle.
- Throw Samum to stun and disorient it.
- Use Igni for damage when it’s exposed.
- Never attack while it’s curled up; it can’t be hurt then.
- Skip Axii entirely, since it makes things worse.
- Signs Weakness: aard
- Oil Weakness: relict oil
- Bomb Weakness: samum
