The Dungeons of the La Valettes is the main quest that frames the Prologue of The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings. After Foltest’s death, Geralt sits in the castle dungeon as the prime suspect, and Vernon Roche’s interrogation is what sends the game into its flashbacks: By the King’s Will, At the Fore, Trial by Fire, To the Temple and finally Blood of His Blood.
Roche is not convinced Geralt is the killer. Once the story is told, he leaves the witcher the key to his shackles and tells him he will be waiting on his ship, so the rest is up to Geralt. Picking a fight with Roche instead is a very short road to a game-over screen.
The breakout plays differently depending on what happened to Aryan La Valette in At the Fore. If Aryan surrendered, he is held in the torture chamber and repays Geralt by showing him a hidden passage, then stays behind as the castle burns. If Aryan died, his mother Luisa is held there instead, and the Nilfgaardian envoy Shilard Fitz-Oesterlen offers to distract the guards. Either way, Geralt slips out and reaches the special forces riverboat, where Triss and Roche are waiting.
