Trial by Fire

Trial by Fire is a main quest in the Prologue of The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings, one of the flashbacks Geralt recounts while Vernon Roche interrogates him. As King Foltest, Geralt, Triss Merigold and Roche push towards the temple of La Valette Castle, where Foltest’s children are held, they are ambushed by a huge fire-breathing dragon, a far cry from the forktail the scouts had reported.

There is no fighting this thing on a bridge, so the job is simply to survive the crossing. Geralt has to move from one covered wooden walkway to the next while the dragon strafes them with fire, help his companions cut down the La Valette soldiers in the way, and finally sprint over a burning bridge before it collapses. Triss’s magic keeps the dragon busy, although her fireballs are best avoided too.

Walkthrough

  1. When the dragon attacks, run into the nearest covered wooden section of the bridge; its roof shields you from the fire while it holds.
  2. Watch the dragon, wait for it to dive out of sight, then dash across the gap to the next covered section.
  3. Help Foltest, Roche and Triss kill the La Valette soldiers blocking the way; Quen helps, but keep clear of Triss’s fireballs.
  4. Move up under the walls where the dragon’s fire cannot reach, letting your companions go first.
  5. After the cutscene, run across the burning bridge quickly; if you are too slow it collapses under you.
