Anna met Phillip Strenger when she nursed him after he took a spear at the Battle of Anchor. He proposed as soon as he could stand, and for a while they were happy, with a daughter, Tamara. War and drink changed Phillip. Lonely and unhappy, Anna began an affair with a childhood friend and eventually left her husband for him. Phillip followed, killed her lover and beat her, and from then on their marriage was one of fear.

The pact

At Crow’s Perch, Anna fell pregnant again and could not bear to carry another child of the man she hated. She struck a bargain with the Crones: a year of service in return for ending the pregnancy. The Crones twisted the deal so that it drained her life too. The Pellar gave her a talisman against their magic, but she lost it the night she and Tamara fled after a violent fight, and a fiend carried her into Crookback Bog.

Gran

In the bog, her mind clouded and her hair turned white, Anna cared for the orphans, who knew her only as Gran. Johnny the godling visited her and sang to her.

In The Witcher 3

Her fate is sealed in Return to Crookback Bog and depends on what Geralt did with the spirit in The Whispering Hillock:

• If the spirit was freed, Anna is found human but lost in madness, and Phillip takes her to a healer in the Blue Mountains.
• If it was killed, she has become a water hag. Breaking the curse either kills her at once or gives her a few moments as herself before she dies. Either way, Phillip hangs himself soon after.
