A Rough Landing is the main quest that opens Chapter 1 of The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings. Fresh out of the La Valette dungeons, Geralt sails with Vernon Roche and Triss Merigold to Flotsam, a trading post under the command of Loredo. With the harbour closed because of a monster lurking in the river, the ship lands on the outskirts and the party sets off on foot.
They do not get far before an elven flute gives the game away. Iorveth, the Scoia’tael commander who counts Roche among his sworn enemies, confronts them over the dead king and his dealings with the kingslayer, and his archers open fire from the bushes. Triss turns the arrows into butterflies and raises a protective shield, at the cost of a nosebleed and her last bit of strength, and Geralt has to hold off the elves until the group reaches the town gate.
The quest ends when a guard at the gate questions the newcomers and lets slip that an execution is about to take place, which leads straight into By the Gods – Stringing Up Sods.
