Beyond Hill and Dale…

Geralt follows Syanna into the Land of a Thousand Fables, a fairy-tale world that has turned dark, where three magic beans are the only way out.

Overview

Beyond Hill and Dale… is a main quest in Blood and Wine and one of the most memorable in the whole game. On Syanna’s path in The Night of Long Fangs, Geralt touches an enchanted book and is pulled into the Land of a Thousand Fables, the illusion created long ago for the young princesses. What Geralt does here is key to the best ending of the expansion.

A fairy tale gone wrong

There is no map inside the illusion, so follow the yellow brick road and the objective marker. After an archespore at the bridge, Geralt finds Syanna at the Wicked Witch’s hut, trying to free Jack from the hearth. After the witch is dealt with, Jack sends them to Joss for the beans.

Syanna explains that, as in the fairy tale, three magic beans will grow a beanstalk to the Cloud Giant’s castle, the only remaining way out. The fablesphere is falling apart, and its creatures, such as the pixies, now see Geralt as an intruder. Riding unicorns, they find Joss, the boy who cried wolf, under attack by wolves. His answers about the beans are backwards, true to his tale.

Three beans

  • The red bean is in the stomach of the Big Bad Wolf, at Grandma’s red hut. He will only talk if they act out the story. Little Red Riding Hood is dead, so Syanna takes her hood from the well and plays the part.
  • The yellow bean is at the top of Longlocks’ tower, guarded by her wraith.
  • The blue bean is with the Three Little Pigs, in the one brick house still standing. Aard brings it down, and the pigs fight like boars. The Three Bears are a red herring, so do not touch their food.

Between the beans, Syanna talks about her past, her exile and Dettlaff. Ask her to tell her story: it matters for the ending.

The ribbon

In the snowy village north of the tower, the Little Flint Girl wears a ribbon that Syanna was given as a child for protection, a memento of happier days. Buy it or win it at gwent and give it to Syanna. This too is required for the best ending. Consider doing Duck, Duck, Goosed! before planting the beans.

The beanstalk

Plant the beans in the field by the village. At the top, the Cloud Giant must be defeated. Depending on earlier conversations, Syanna may seduce Geralt, with no consequences either way. Near the castle bridge, a will-o’-the-wisp leads to the sword Gesheft. The exit is a well, which drops them into the fountain at Beauclair Palace, where Regis is waiting. The story continues in Tesham Mutna.
