Overview
Tesham Mutna is the main quest in Blood and Wine where Geralt finally confronts Dettlaff, at the ancient ruins of Tesham Mutna in Caroberta Woods. It follows either What Lies Unseen or Beyond Hill and Dale….
How it begins
- If Geralt went to the Unseen Elder, Dettlaff arrives and gives him no choice but to fight.
- If Geralt brought Syanna, Dettlaff tries to kill her. If she wears the ribbon from the Land of a Thousand Fables, its protection whisks her to safety, and an enraged Dettlaff attacks Geralt. Without the ribbon, she dies, and Geralt can fight Dettlaff or let him go.
If Syanna dies, Anna Henrietta has Geralt thrown into prison, which leads to Burlap is the New Stripe. If she lives, the story continues in Pomp and Strange Circumstance. Defeating Dettlaff counts as proof of valor for There Can Be Only One.
The battle
While Regis holds Dettlaff off, Geralt can prepare, change skills and save. Save here, since there are no progress saves between the stages. Bombs that only cause status effects, Axii and oils do nothing to Dettlaff, but Grapeshot and Dancing Star work, and Quen is essential.
- Humanoid form. Fast, dashing attacks. Dodge behind him and strike quickly, as against Olgierd.
- Flying form. Roll away from his slashes and keep your distance from the bat swarm, which ignores Quen. When he dives, knock him down with Aard, Igni or a crossbow bolt and hit hard.
- Body illusion. Inside a vision of Dettlaff’s own chest, destroy three pulsing hearts on the walls while fending off his blood clones.
When all three stages are done, Dettlaff is left barely alive, and his fate is sealed.
