Following the Thread (The Witcher)

Following the Thread is a main quest in Act III of The Witcher that drags Geralt from Vizima’s Temple Quarter down into the sewers. It starts at the end of A Posh Reception, when Declan Leuvaarden tells Geralt that Salamandra funds itself by selling fisstech and runs a production base somewhere in the Temple Quarter. He points Geralt to the jailer Jethro, who knows the local trade better than anyone.

Jethro sends Geralt to the dealer Angus, whose letter of recommendation is the ticket into the Salamandra drug lab beneath the city. Inside, Geralt finds a letter from Gellert Bleinheim, commander of a Salamandra cell, and fights his way out to where the city guard is waiting. Handing the letter to Jethro wraps things up and kicks off The Viziman Connection.

Walkthrough

  1. After A Posh Reception, talk to Leuvaarden, then visit Jethro at the prison in the Temple Quarter.
  2. Find Angus next to the Hairy Bear inn during the day and get his letter of recommendation, either by buying it or by taking it from his body.
  3. Optionally learn the password (“thorn”) by bribing the innkeeper of the New Narakort in the Trade Quarter and asking about his illustrious guests.
  4. Go to the Salamandra base on the northern side of the sewers, tell the two guards Angus sent you and give the password.
  5. Find the letter from Gellert Bleinheim on the eastern side of the base; picking it up turns the assassins hostile.
  6. Fight your way back to the entrance, where the city guard is waiting.
  7. Report to Jethro outside to collect 100 orens and finish the quest.

Quest Consequences & Choices

  • Angus: ask for “stuff” and mention Kalkstein and he sells you the letter for 1,500 orens; say anything else and he runs to his house, attacks you and drops the letter, a key and a signet ring when he dies.
  • Password: the right answer gets you inside without a fight; the wrong one starts it at the door.
  • Quiet entry: if you get in peacefully, you can find the sleeping chief chemist in a back room. Promise not to turn him in and he gives you the Petri’s Philter formula.
