Hunting a Witch

Hunting a Witch is a main quest in Velen and the start of the second storyline Geralt can follow there, alongside the Bloody Baron’s. According to the notes of the dead imperial agent Hendrik, Ciri quarrelled with a witch living near the village of Midcopse. Nobody tells Geralt exactly where, so for once the great witcher has to swallow his pride and ask for directions.

Asking around Midcopse

The villagers are not the chatty type, but there are a few ways to get the information. Two gossiping women by the well can be overheard, an old man with a pipe gives up the location easily, and a peasant whose back was recently cured by the witch can be bribed, charmed with Axii or simply followed. If Geralt follows him, the man walks straight into a pack of nekkers and becomes much more helpful after being rescued.

The witch of the woods

The trail ends at a hut in the forest northeast of Midcopse, where villagers are lining up for remedies. The witch turns out to be Keira Metz, a sorceress Geralt knows from the past, hiding in the wilderness from the witch hunters. She has not met Ciri, and the witch from Hendrik’s notes is someone else. But Keira did have an unexpected visitor recently: a masked elven mage who was also asking about Ciri. She knows where he went, and the two set out together, leading into Wandering in the Dark.

Walkthrough

  1. Ask the villagers of Midcopse about the witch during the day: eavesdrop on the women by the well, talk to the old man with the pipe, or get directions from the peasant with the bad back (pay 50 crowns, use Axii, or follow him and save him from nekkers).
  2. Follow the path north of the village, past the large boulder and the abandoned cart guarded by nekkers.
  3. Enter the witch’s hut and search it with your witcher senses.
  4. Talk to Keira Metz about Ciri and the elven mage.

Quest Consequences & Choices

Keira joins Geralt for Wandering in the Dark. How you treat her in the quests that follow decides whether she can later become an ally at Kaer Morhen.
