In Wolf’s Clothing

The werewolf Morkvarg haunts Freya's Garden on Hindarsfjall and cannot stay dead. Geralt can end him for good, or break the curse.

Overview

In Wolf’s Clothing is a secondary quest in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, set in Freya’s Garden and Larvik on Hindarsfjall in the Skellige Isles. It comes up during the main quests Missing Persons and Nameless, or from the notice “Contract: Morkvarg” in Larvik.

A werewolf who will not die

Josta, a priestess at the Temple of Freya, explains that Morkvarg has been killed many times and always comes back. The late archpriestess Ulve cursed him with her dying breath for his crimes, above all for attacking the sacred garden. Einar, a pilgrim who survived that day, is at Larvik’s harbor. He says Ulve’s curse turned Morkvarg into a werewolf, and that his men turned to ash in the beast’s mouth. Parts of his story do not add up.

The garden and the cave

In the garden, past a few wolves, a ladder in the southeastern wall leads to a floodgate mechanism, then to Morkvarg’s cave. Beat him down and he begs Geralt to lift the curse. He always escapes, leaving werewolf meat behind. A hole in the cave floor points to a flooded cave where a key was lost.

Two ways to end it

Trick the curse. Through the left floodgate, a building in the garden holds a bloody werewolf leg on a chain. Morkvarg appears and tells a story with a hint in it: the curse will not let him eat his own flesh. Beat him again and feed him the werewolf meat. That kills him for good.

Lift the curse. Through the right floodgate, swim to the flooded cave and take the padlock key. It opens the rooms in the house by the sacred tree, where Morkvarg’s journal reveals that Einar was one of his crew. Confront Einar. If you talk him down, he admits that he cursed Morkvarg himself with a cursed fang, and that giving the fang back lifts the curse. Without that confession, Geralt will not know how to use the fang. Morkvarg becomes human again. Geralt can kill him as Einar asks, or ask for the reward Morkvarg promised, which is collected from the Loan Shark in Novigrad.

Either way, Josta pays for the contract.
