The Ballista

The Ballista is a Chapter 1 side quest in The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings, set inside Commandant Bernard Loredo’s compound near Flotsam. While visiting, Geralt and Vernon Roche notice a brand-new ballista pointed at the harbour, and Roche is not keen on letting Loredo decide which ships get to reach the docks. Geralt agrees to put it out of action.

One guard is still watching the ballista while his colleagues are busy with the ladies of the compound, so Geralt needs a distraction. Margarita, one of the women there, will lure the guard away, either for 60 orens or as a favour once Geralt teaches a lesson to Myron and Alphonse, two bullies who mistreat the girls, at the arm wrestling table. With the guard gone, Geralt removes part of the trigger mechanism and the ballista is left useless.

Walkthrough

  1. In Loredo’s compound, notice the ballista aimed at the harbour; Roche asks you to disable it.
  2. Check the guard posted by the ballista; he is the one who needs to be lured away.
  3. Talk to Margarita nearby and either pay her 60 orens or offer to help her instead.
  4. If helping: beat Myron and Alphonse at arm wrestling at the table next to her, then return to Margarita.
  5. Once she lures the guard away, sabotage the ballista’s trigger mechanism.

Quest Consequences & Choices

  • Pay Margarita 60 orens: quick, but costs money.
  • Arm wrestle Myron and Alphonse: free, and earns an extra 50 XP.
