The Crown Witness is a main quest in Act II of The Witcher, set in Vizima’s Temple Quarter. It starts the first time Geralt talks to Raymond Maarloeve, who has heard that the city guard has locked up a Salamandra agent. A living, talking Salamander is exactly what Geralt needs, so he sets off to question the prisoner before someone else silences him.
Captain Vincent will not discuss the captive, so the real door-opener is the prison guard Jethro, whose cooperation costs a dose of fisstech. The prisoner turns out to have been moved to St. Lebioda’s hospital, where Shani and the guards insist on night-time visits only. When Geralt finally gets to his bedside, the man manages a single word, “Kalkstein”, before Ramsmeat’s thugs storm in. Afterwards Geralt and Raymond have two leads to chase: the alchemist Kalkstein and the bandit Ramsmeat.
