What Lies Beneath is a secondary quest in Act II of The Witcher, set in Vizima’s Temple Quarter and running alongside the investigation Geralt conducts with the detective Raymond Maarloeve in Vizima Confidential. Once Geralt has cleared at least one suspect, it becomes obvious that Raymond’s list of culprits is not as solid as he claims, and Geralt starts looking for leads of his own.
The trail leads to the chapter’s big reveal: Raymond is not Raymond at all, but Azar Javed wearing his face. Geralt can uncover this in the cemetery crypt, at the autopsy in Anatomy of a Crime, or by clearing enough suspects. From there it is about quietly gathering allies among the falsely accused, teaming up with Kalkstein, and setting a trap for Azar in the swamp tower.
