Where Children Toil, Toys Waste Away

A streetwise bootblack in Beauclair Port knows where Dettlaff has been living, if the price is right. The trail leads to a toy workshop.

Overview

Where Children Toil, Toys Waste Away is a main quest in Blood and Wine, following La Cage au Fou. If you want to do Amidst the Mill’s Grist, visit Count de la Croix’s Mill first, as it becomes unavailable once this quest ends.

The bootblack

The vision from Regis’ potion points to a bootblack in Beauclair Port, who works between 8 am and 8 pm. When Geralt finds him, some angry men are harassing the boy, and whatever Geralt says, it ends in a fistfight. A ducal guard then arrives and arrests the men.

The boy has learned the ways of the street, and he wants money for what he knows. Geralt can haggle, use Axii or pay the full price, which counts as proof of generosity for There Can Be Only One. Then Regis turns up, recovered from his ordeal, and talks the boy into revealing where Dettlaff has been staying.

The Rocking Horse

The trail leads along the port to The Rocking Horse, a toy workshop. Regis takes care of the locked door. The toys downstairs mean nothing, but upstairs are a woman’s face on the wall, a music box, tools and, most important, two sets of documents: a suspicious letter in a jug by the stairs and letters in the corner by the workbench. Together they reveal more about the woman in Dettlaff’s life and point Geralt toward the next step, Wine is Sacred.
