Nilfgaardian Quarter
The Nilfgaardian Quarter is the district of Loc Muinne occupied by the Empire’s delegation during the summit of mages and monarchs in The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings. The Nilfgaardians pitched their camp well away from everyone else. They hold the northern kingdoms in low regard and see the Nordlings as barbarians, so keeping their distance came naturally.
The ancient elven city itself, however, stirred something in them. Native Nilfgaardians carry a trace of elven blood, and the Empire’s language is a variant of the Elder Speech, so Loc Muinne’s white ruins feel a little less foreign to them than to the northern kings. Officially the delegation, led by the envoy Shilard Fitz-Oesterlen, has come to shape the treaties in the Emperor’s favour. Unofficially, its walls hide a prisoner.
In The Witcher 2
The quarter is closed to Geralt for most of Chapter 3 and only opens during Where is Triss Merigold?, if he chooses to go after Triss instead of helping Roche rescue Anais or freeing Philippa Eilhart. The Nilfgaardians are holding Triss in their dungeon and interrogating her about the Lodge of Sorceresses.
Geralt takes Shilard hostage to get inside, but the knight commander Renuald aep Matsen simply shoots the envoy, and the whole camp turns on the witcher. From there it is a long fight through the courtyards, over the walls and rooftops and past a pond, until Geralt confronts Renuald, who accuses Triss of conspiring against the kings. Renuald’s body yields the keys to the dungeon, the Armor of Vicovaro and a letter from the Emperor.
In the dungeon, Triss tells Geralt that she had little real influence in the Lodge, that Philippa and Síle de Tansarville were behind the death of King Demavend, and what she knows about Síle’s ties to Letho. Geralt escorts her out, and the story moves on to A Summit of Mages.
If Geralt chooses differently, he never fights his way in: Letho gets Triss out of Nilfgaardian hands himself.
Good to know
- Prepare before you enter. Once inside, it is one fight after another until Renuald falls.
- Do not kill Renuald with Igni: a known bug can then stop you from freeing Triss.
- The Armor of Vicovaro from Renuald’s body is one of the better armours of Chapter 3.
