Overview
A Towerful of Mice is a secondary quest in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and one of the most memorable ghost stories in Velen. It follows An Invitation from Keira Metz and takes place on Fyke Isle in Lake Wyndamer and in the village of Oreton. It is required to romance Keira or get her to Kaer Morhen, and fails if not completed before The Isle of Mists.
The island
Keira lends Geralt her boat. Fyke Isle is crawling with rotfiends, drowners and ghouls, with a water hag in front of the tower. Swarms of black flies can be burned away with Igni. With the magic lamp Geralt can watch seven haunting scenes, three outside and four inside the tower, showing the last moments of the people who died there.
Anabelle’s story
The tower is overrun by rats. Two levers in its false top reveal the mage’s lab, and there the lamp summons the ghost of Anabelle, daughter of the former lord. The mage Alexander had been experimenting on rats with a disease called the Catriona plague. When peasants stormed the tower and killed everyone, Anabelle drank a potion Alexander had given her, believing it would kill her. It only put her into a deathlike paralysis. The peasants left her for dead, and when she woke, still unable to move, the rats ate her alive.
Geralt reasons that a curse born of hate can only be broken by love. Anabelle says she will forgive her beloved Graham, who left her believing she was dead, if Geralt takes her bones to him for burial.
Two endings
Take the bones to Graham. Graham, a fisherman in Oreton, admits he let the peasants onto the island. After Geralt leaves, a scream brings him back: Graham is dead among the rats, and Anabelle floats above him as a pesta, a plague maiden. With her bones off the island the curse is lifted, but she is free to spread plague across the world.
Refuse. This option is only there if Geralt used the lamp to see the murder of the looter. Anabelle reveals herself as the pesta and attacks, but cannot die while the curse holds. Geralt brings Graham to the island, where wraiths of the curse’s victims attack. At the top of the tower Graham tells Anabelle he still loves her and kisses her. She becomes human again, he dies, and the two are united in death. The curse is broken for good.
Back at Keira’s hut she asks one more favor, which becomes A Favor for a Friend.
