Oreton
Oreton is a small harbor village in southwestern Velen, in the Mire, sitting on the northern shore of Lake Wyndamer. It is the only village built right on the lake’s edge, a cluster of wooden houses facing the water, with boats pulled up near the middle of the village and Fyke Isle and its tower out on the lake. A Nilfgaardian unit is stationed here, so imperial soldiers mix with fishermen who complain that there are hardly any fish left. The village is fairly young: it was founded only a few years before 1272 by Count Primislavus don Stessa, a distant cousin of King Foltest, who was best known for racing chariots down narrow forest roads, to the delight of the ladies and the fury of his rivals.
In The Witcher 3
Oreton is a handy base for the southern half of Velen. Its notice board carries work from two very different employers. The ealdorman, Sobemir, promises a generous gift to whoever frees the neighboring village of Honorton from the “beast” haunting it. The Nilfgaardian commander, Milan Noran, wants someone to find out what happened to a patrol that vanished near Byways, a trail that leads to the ekimmara Sarasti.
The fisherman Graham lives here too. He plays a key part in lifting the curse on Fyke Isle, because the restless spirit of his lost love Anabelle, now a plague maiden, will only rest if he comes to the island himself. And if Geralt rescues little Millie from massacred Honorton, this is where he brings her to live with her aunt; visit again a few days later and she has a small thank-you gift for him.
The village also has a blacksmith who sells crossbows and bolts, and a merchant who plays gwent with a Northern Realms deck. The real gwent catch, though, is the boatwright by the boats, one of the best players in Velen. He plays Nilfgaard and gives up the Letho of Gulet card when beaten.
