The Paths of Destiny

The Paths of Destiny is a secondary quest in Act IV of The Witcher, set around the Lakeside and Black Tern Island. Geralt finally catches up with Berengar, the witcher whose trail he has been following since Vizima, inside the Lakeside crypt. The two fight side by side through alps, bruxae and a wraith, and Geralt hopes that saving each other’s skins will loosen Berengar’s tongue.

By a campfire Berengar admits the Salamandra made him work for them, then clams up. The Lady of the Lake has had a vision of a witcher whose path leads into a dark future, and she wants to know which of the two it is. Once she is convinced it is Geralt, she rewards him with the silver sword Aerondight. Berengar has one last talk in him, though, and how Geralt answers decides whether they part ways or draw swords.

Walkthrough

  1. Meet Berengar in the Lakeside crypt and follow him while he fights alps, bruxae and a wraith (he waits if you stop to loot).
  2. Talk to him at the campfire outside the crypt.
  3. Speak with the Lady of the Lake about her vision, then question Berengar again and report back to her.
  4. Finish The Heat of the Day, then talk to Julian in Murky Waters, who says the Fisher King wants to see you.
  5. Follow the Fisher King’s directions to the Lady of the Lake at Dagon’s temple and receive Aerondight. Sell your old silver sword first if you want its value; Aerondight takes its slot.
  6. When you try to leave Black Tern Island by boat, Berengar confronts you. Decide his fate.

Quest Consequences & Choices

  • Let him go (“I won’t judge you”): Berengar goes his own way and turns up again in Act V to help you in battle.
  • Fight him (“Enough self-pity, traitor”): you kill him and can loot his medallion and 866 orens from his body.

Either way you receive the same XP, Berengar’s letter, The Book of the Full Moon and the Dagon Sap scroll.
