Identity is a secondary quest in The Witcher that begins in Act III in Vizima’s Trade Quarter, but it is really one of the threads holding the whole story together. Geralt still has no memory of his past, and when he raises it with Triss she admits not even her magic can bring it back. Her advice is to stop chasing the old Geralt and build a new identity instead, warning that piecing himself together from other people’s stories could leave him with a false picture.
From there the quest follows Geralt’s conversations about who he is: with Thaler about what drives him, with Triss about the side he takes in the war between the Order and the Scoia’tael, with Dandelion about killing people, with the Lady of the Lake about destiny and, late in the game, with King Foltest about the women in his life. There is no single right answer. Each choice simply defines this version of the White Wolf, and many of them come with a tidy chunk of experience.
