Overview
Wild at Heart is a secondary quest in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, set in Blackbough and the woods nearby in Velen. The notice “Missing Wife” hangs on several boards, including Mulbrydale, Midcopse, the Inn at the Crossroads and Crow’s Perch.
A missing wife
In Blackbough, Niellen is talking to his sister-in-law Margrit outside a hut. His wife Hanna has disappeared. The butcher’s wife, the blacksmith and his children each add details about the morning she vanished, and a marker in the woods shows where to look.
In the woods, a pack of wolves is gathered around a body. When they are dead, Margrit appears and offers Geralt money to tell Niellen that Hanna is dead and leave it there. She says she does not want to lose him and that he deserves better.
Two ways to end it
Take the bribe and lie. Niellen is told his wife is gone and offers a small reward. As long as you do not report to him, the clues stay, so you can take Margrit’s money and still investigate.
Keep digging. The dog’s corpse and the bloody remains that must be Hanna’s point to a werewolf. Claw marks lead to a scratched stone and a tuft of fur. Its scent leads past torn clothes to an isolated shack with notes inside and a locked chest. A trail of blood leads to a lair hidden beneath it. Watch out for a bear nearby.
The werewolf
At nightfall a werewolf and three wolves arrive. He is fast and aggressive and regenerates once badly hurt, so press the attack. Near the end Margrit runs in, and the truth comes out. The werewolf is Niellen. Margrit had known for years and loved him anyway. She showed her sister what he was, hoping Hanna would leave him. Instead, in a blind rage, Niellen killed his own wife.
Niellen now wants Margrit dead. Geralt can tell her to run and finish Niellen himself, or let the werewolf take his revenge, after which Niellen asks Geralt to end his life. Niellen’s key opens the chest in the shack.
