The Assassins of Kings is the central main quest of The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings and runs through the Prologue, Chapter 1, Chapter 2 and Chapter 3. It follows Geralt’s hunt for the witcher-like killers behind the deaths of northern kings. In the Prologue the journal recalls how Geralt foiled an earlier attempt on Foltest’s life in Vizima, then describes Foltest’s murder, for which Geralt is blamed, and his journey up the Pontar to Flotsam.
In Chapter 1 Geralt sees the kingslayer, Letho, near Flotsam in the company of the Scoia’tael leader Iorveth. With Triss Merigold he questions Iorveth’s wounded adjutant Ciaran on the prison barge, learns that Letho betrayed the Scoia’tael, and has Zoltan take him to Iorveth. After killing an arachas in the forest, Geralt agrees to bring a bound Iorveth to Letho as bait, but loses the duel with the kingslayer. Letho then kidnaps Triss and has her open a portal to Vergen.
In Chapter 2 Geralt follows the trail around Vergen. He learns that Letho and his two companions turned on the Scoia’tael and planned something tied to the Redanian delegation, and that the sorceress Síle de Tansarville ordered King Demavend’s death with the help of Philippa Eilhart. In Henselt’s Kaedweni camp Geralt saves the king from an assassin and assists the sorcerer Dethmold with a necromantic ritual, which leads him to the assassins’ hideout. The trail ends in Loc Muinne.
In Chapter 3 Geralt confronts Síle after the dragon fight in Loc Muinne, learns about the Lodge of Sorceresses from the imprisoned Philippa, and finally meets Letho. Letho reveals that he is a witcher of the Viper School from Cintra, working for Emperor Emhyr of Nilfgaard to destabilize the Northern Kingdoms, and that he and Geralt shared a past. The quest ends with Letho either dead or walking away.
