Louis Merse

The town chancellor of Flotsam and cousin of Bernard Loredo, who pays out monster bounties and hides a dirty secret.

Louis Merse is the town chancellor of Flotsam in Chapter 1 of The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings, and a textbook case of nepotism. Rumour has it he left Vizima in a hurry after getting himself into some unpleasant trouble, and his cousin, Commandant Bernard Loredo, found him a comfortable post in Flotsam as a second chance.

Merse runs the town’s paperwork and the royal mail, and he pays out the bounties on monsters posted on the notice board. He is very fond of his forms.

In The Witcher 2

Geralt deals with him over The Nekker Contract and The Endrega Contract, where the payout comes with a hefty “monster tax”. Merse is also the official who wrote a safe-conduct pass for the bandit Dmitri. When Geralt deals with Dmitri, that letter and a report found with it show that Merse and Loredo were mixed up in the local fisstech trade and were covering for criminals like him.

Good to know

  • His house is just off the main square; the merchant Fioravanti trades right in front of it.
