The Messenger is a Chapter 3 side quest in The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings on the Roche path, set in Loc Muinne. It branches off Lilies and Vipers: once Geralt shows that the letter blamed on Baron Kimbolt carries a forged signature, Kimbolt points him at his rival, Count Maravel, and claims that any letter carried by Maravel’s messenger would expose the count as a Nilfgaardian collaborator.
Geralt meets Kimbolt’s spy Aldrich in the Temerian courtyard and goes with him to intercept the messenger, Hieronymus Lash. Lash bolts as soon as the trap is sprung, and the chase runs through Nilfgaardian-held ground to a showdown with a man who turns out to be a teleporting, meteor-throwing mage rather than a humble courier.
The letters on Lash’s body suggest Maravel was working with Nilfgaard and set up the attack on the convoy carrying the royal bastards, which cost Boussy his life. Geralt then takes the evidence to John Natalis. Note that the parallel quest Pacta Sunt Servanda paints a rather different picture of who is guilty.
