The orphanage stands in the middle of Crookback Bog at the far end of the Trail of Treats, a small settlement deep in the swamp and wrapped in mist. Sweets dangle from branches and litter the path leading to it, and everything about the place looks a little too cosy for a swamp. Children play nearby, and an old woman known as Gran keeps a very close eye on them.

In the game, the orphanage is a key stop in the main quest Ladies of the Wood. Geralt has to earn the children’s trust, which means playing along with them and getting Gran out of the way, and one of them, a boy called Johnny, turns out to be more than he seems. Only then does Gran agree to take him to the Crones.

Spoiler ahead: Gran is not simply a caretaker. She is Anna, the Bloody Baron’s missing wife, who made a terrible bargain with the Crones, and her fate ties this swamp directly to the Family Matters storyline at Crow’s Perch.
