Abigail

Abigail is the herbalist and local witch of the Outskirts, suspected by the Reverend of bringing the Beast upon the village.

Abigail is the witch of the Outskirts of Vizima, the village where Geralt spends Act I of The Witcher. She lives in a house apart from the others, brews potions and poisons, and sells them to whoever pays without asking many questions. The villagers buy from her and despise her in the same breath, and whenever something goes wrong in the village, she is the first one they blame.

She has also taken in the orphan Alvin, a boy who falls into prophetic trances.

In The Witcher

In Of Monsters and Men, the Reverend first sends Geralt to light the village’s Eternal Fire shrines against the barghests. When that does nothing, he points the finger at Abigail. She tells Geralt she cannot conjure the Beast herself, but that Alvin may see the truth if she brews him a potion from five white myrtle petals. Alvin’s vision suggests the village called the Beast down on itself through its own wickedness. Abigail then hands over Berengar‘s notes on the Beast.

The climax comes in a cave, where Geralt is trapped with Abigail while an angry mob led by the Reverend waits outside to kill her. Geralt can stand with her and persuade the villagers to hold off, or insist on a trial and walk away, leaving her to her fate. If he sides with Abigail, she fights beside him against the Beast; otherwise Odo and a few peasants do.

Consequences in Act IV

The choice follows Geralt. If he saved her, Abigail leaves the Outskirts for good and turns up again in Murky Waters in Act IV, still trading herbs and potions in place of the local healer. She is then the buyer in The Devourer Contract, and her fate also changes how The Heat of the Day plays out. If Geralt let the mob have her, she is burned at the stake after he leaves, and the healer of Murky Waters tells him he has innocent blood on his hands.

Good to know

  • Abigail is behind The Barghest Contract on the notice board outside the inn: ten barghest skulls for 100 orens and a mandrake root.
  • She sells the book Field Plants, which together with the Herbalism skill lets Geralt pick the white myrtle petals she needs.
  • She also sells a blade coating formula that makes fights against specters and ghosts easier.
