Bald Mountain rises out of the Velen countryside as a steep, wooded height, with a village huddled at its foot where peasants gather each year for the Crones’ great sabbath. A winding path climbs from the village to a gate near the peak, and beyond it a colossal ancient tree spreads its roots across the mountain, hiding a network of tunnels and a lake far below. At the very top lies a windswept summit with a Place of Power for the Quen sign.

The mountain is the annual meeting place of the Crones of Crookback Bog, who invite guests to their Witches’ Sabbath. In the game, that guest list includes Imlerith, the Wild Hunt general who killed Vesemir at Kaer Morhen. Ciri learns of it from Avallac’h, and she and Geralt ride out from Kaer Morhen for revenge.

In the main quest Bald Mountain, Geralt and Ciri first have to earn a spot on the mountain, which means talking their way past the gatekeepers and fishing a coin from a lake, and a fiend lurks on the way back. Then they split up. Ciri fights her way down the roots of the great tree to face the three Crones, Brewess, Whispess and Weavess, while Geralt climbs to the summit for a deathmatch against Imlerith. Two of the Crones die, but the third escapes with Vesemir’s medallion. It is one of the most personal and dramatic moments of the whole story.
