Gustfields

The Gustfields are the Redanian countryside that spreads around Novigrad and east along the Pontar toward the river delta. It is the prettiest land Geralt crosses in the North: swaying wheat fields, windmills, beehives and lazy villages under a wide sky, with old manors and estates tucked among groves and meadows. On a clear day the walls and the smoky haze of Novigrad hang on the horizon. Just across the Pontar to the south lies Velen, and the contrast between golden Redanian farmland and Velen’s bleak, war-torn bogs could hardly be sharper.

The name itself never appears in the game. It comes from the paper map included with most editions, so do not expect a signpost that says “Gustfields”. The region is home to rich and famous families such as the Garins, the von Everecs and the Moldavies, and to the university town of Oxenfurt on the river.

In The Witcher 3

In the base game the Gustfields are a quieter stretch between Novigrad and Oxenfurt, dotted with farms, inns and the occasional monster. Yantra and its talkative villagers sit in the northeast, the Seven Cats Inn watches the road by Novigrad’s Southern Gate, the Honeyfill Meadworks has a spectral hound problem, and the noble Vegelbud estate hosts horse races and grand parties.

Hearts of Stone adds a large new area in the east. Olgierd’s Wild Ones occupy Garin Estate, lakeside Brunwich throws the wedding of the year, the ruined Von Everec Estate hides the saddest love story in the expansion, and an Ofieri runewright opens shop at the Upper Mill. Farther east, the cursed woods around the Arnskrone Castle Ruins are no place for an evening walk. Fallen Knights, harpies, erynias and an archgriffin round out the welcome committee.

Smaller spots are worth a detour too. Gustfields Farm, just north of Oxenfurt, was founded by an eccentric flaxen-haired painter named Cunigund de Cabbrae who came looking for peace, quiet and fresh country air, and the scenery suggests the painter chose well. The Herbalist’s Hut nearby belongs to Otto Bamber, whose cellar doubles as the meeting room for the Open Sesame! heist crew. Est Tayiar, an old elven ruin, hides Philippa Eilhart’s abandoned lair, the Honeyfill Meadworks and the Dancing Windmill mark the chase after a lone Wild Hunt hound, and Bowdon has been overrun by ghouls. Out east, the Vikk Watchtower is a nest of harpies and erynias, an archgriffin guards a surprise inheritance at Stacheier, and Fallen Knights have stashed loot around Mohrin Village.

Quests in the Gustfields

Good to know

  • The Gustfields sit on the same world map as Novigrad and Velen, so their signposts connect by fast travel to both.
  • Most of the Hearts of Stone content lies in the eastern Gustfields, beyond Oxenfurt. Expect level 30+ enemies there.
